NZ Parliamentarians' Group on Population and Development

About the NZPPD
The New Zealand Parliamentarians' Group on Population and Development (NZPPD) was established in 1998 in response to the Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and its Programme of Action (1995-2015), to which 179 countries subscribed. Funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the group is modelled on United Kingdom and Australian groups, and is part of an international network. more on the ICPD >>
The NZPPD is an all-party group and the five major political parties are represented.
NZPPD aims and objectives
The NZPPD aims to create a supportive environment nationally and internationally for implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action by:
- increasing informed debate and information about global population and development issues, including sexual and reproductive health; and
- creating awareness of the important role parliamentarians can play in influencing and shaping policy.
The focus of the group's work is Pacific Island Countries.
Membership
Membership of the NZPPD is open to any New Zealand MP who subscribes to the aims and objectives of the Group. There are currently 46 members - representing 38% of the House of Representatives.

Membership includes the opportunity to:
- participate in study tours and/or other international meetings of parliamentarians
- receive up-to-date information on population and development and reproductive health issues
- attend meetings and public fora addressed by guest speakers
- access the latest research findings.
